Matt LaPorta is a former major league baseball player. LaPorta was one of the top prospects in baseball in 2007 until 2009. He was a first round draft pick of the Brewers out of college (two time SEC Player of the Year) and proceeded to club minor league pitching including a AA line of .279, .386, .539 in 2008. He was a prospector's dream, a can't miss young player knocking the cover off the ball, and progressing as intended. Prices for his cards skyrocketed on the secondary market.
But then LaPorta made it to the big leagues in 2009. And after being a great minor league hitter, he struggled at the pro level. His batting average was too low, he struck out too much, and his defense in the field was less than elite. The LaPorta craze had crashed. LaPorta was out of major league baseball by 2012 at the age of 27. He was out of minor league baseball by 2015.
