Ryan Howard is a former major league baseball player. Howard burst into the major leagues in 2005, after playing mostly in the minors in 2004. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2005 and then the NL MVP award in 2006. The large, power hitting first baseman was a fan favorite in Philadelphia where he spent his whole career. At the age of 32 injuries began to take their toll on Howard and his skills began to wane. In 2017 he attempted to come back and play for the Braves and Rockies, but did not make it to the majors with either team. Howard announced his retirement on Sep 4, 2018.
He was connected to steroids by an Al Jazeera documentary on performance enhancing drugs in sport. Howard would sue the network along with several other major league players.
Howard finished his career with 382 home runs, 3 All-Star team appearances, and led the league in RBI's 3 times as well as home runs twice. But he also struck out, a lot. In 2008 he set the major league record for strikeouts in a season by a batter. That record was broken the very next year, and is no longer even in the top ten seasons for strikeouts by a batter.
